About

At present, I work as a full time online journalist for OWL Media, but I have previously undertaken research for the NUS regarding student ICT usage and provision, in addition to being a sessional lecturer at Birkbeck College, teaching Media Ethics & Politics as part of its BA Journalism degree pathway.

I have recently graduated with a PhD from the University of Winchester (degree awarded by the University of Southampton). My thesis discussed online journalism, or to be precise, the new forms of reading and interaction that have developed around it within a cultural studies/literary theory framework, in particular, Reader Response Theory.

During my research degree, I taught English Literature as a part-time lecturer between 2005-2008, teaching an entire module on Computing In English Studies, in addition to a wide range of texts, ranging from Moore's Utopia, through early modern texts and 19th century novels to contemporary works such as Ian McEwan's Saturday and the works of David Dabydeen.

Prior to that, I studied a PGDip in Print Journalism at the University of Westminster, with a particular focus on DTP, feature writing and media law, which I then upgraded to a full MA in Journalism, for which I received a distinction.

My first degree was at King Alfred's College (prior to it becoming the University of Winchester), in English Literature. I particularly distinguished myself with a dissertation discussing HP Lovecraft and continental literary theory, and Postmodernism, in both cases earning Firsts.

To summarise, my research interests are: Hypertext; Computing In The Humanities; Online Cultures; Literary/English Studies; Victorian/Edwardian popular fiction; Modernism; Non-Fiction and American Studies.

In regards to non-academic work, until recently I wrote for a monthly music magazine on a regular basis and have worked at YouGov on a print design project. My personal interests include writing fiction, and I have already had several short stories published, namely in Nature magazine ('Shambles') and Polluto ('Dear Dave').
