About

Having graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a passion for all things post-glacial (LUP and Mesolithic) but a more overriding interest in working and living where I grew up in South Cumbria, I was first employed at the Lancaster Unversity Archaeological Unit, which became Oxford Archaeology North in 2001. Realising the benefits of commercial work in opening up whole fields of archaeology in which I had never had any previous experience in (e.g. standing buildings, industrial, and every period other than prehistory) I remained there for just over 6 years, working primarily on desk-based work and building recording. After time though the lengthy commute persuaded my partner and I to set up our own company, Greenlane Archaeology, based in Ulverston, which celebrated 5 years at the end of 2010. As well as being able to publish work off the back of development control led projects and enable the publication by others through the same means, this also allowed me to pursue areas of research that have interested me on a variety of subjects, although I tend to get easily distracted as a result! At one time I considered the route of a PhD but I suspect I would have found it too restrictive looking at one subject for so long. I am passionately interested in the archaeology of Cumbria, particularly the south and west of the county, and particularly enjoy the manner in which the commercial sector can provide opportunities for research while at the same time forming as useful part of the development process, if only all the clients felt the same way!

I have been involved in the archaeology of the region since the age of 16 through various local groups, and am now a committee member of the Cumbria Industrial History Society and the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, as well as a member of many more such organisations.
