Biography: Catherine Fargher
As a writer, Catherine has had over twenty scripts produced for radio, puppetry, hybrid performance, theatre and children’s theatre including: Dr Egg and the Man with No Ear, (Sydney Opera House Youth Production Unit and Redmoon Theatre Chicago), BioHome: The Chromosome Knitting Project, (University of Wollongong Gallery, Experimental Art Foundation/Vitalstatistix (SA)), The Violin Player, The Jetty and The Woman Who Knitted Herself a Child (ABC Radio Airplay), The Body Ophelia, (New Theatre), Succulent (Terrapin Puppet Theatre Hobart), There Waits the Wolf, (ABC Classic FM 'The Listening Room' (prod. Jane Ulman)), The Marigold Hour, (Vitalstatistix National Women's Theatre, SA (dir Maude Davey), Future Tense (Sidetrack Performance Group), Selling Grandma (Death Defying Theatre (now UTP), Same Difference (Theatre of the Deaf). Catherine has performed widely as a writer/musician/performer in Cabaret and performance in Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane. In 1998 she toured to with other Australian, UK and New York artists for 'It's Queer up North' in Manchester, Glasgow, Warwick and London (funded by the Australia Council, and Britain’s Lottery Arts Fund).
She completed her Doctorate of Creative Arts at Wollongong University under the supervision of acclaimed novelist Merlinda Bobis and New Media artist Brogan Bunt, where she developed performance texts from a series of original bio-ethical fables. Her play Dr Egg and The Man with No Ear is toured Chicago in 2008 and to Montreal, Vancouver, and Alaska in 2010. BioHome featured in the Experimental Art Foundation’s Biotechnology and Art Revisited in Adelaide in April 2009.
Awards
In 2010 and 2011, Catherine was awarded two AWGIE (Australian Writers Guild Industry) awards for Original Radio Play (The Violin Player 2010) and Children's Theatre (Dr Egg and the Man With No Ear 2010). In 2001 and 2006 she was the recipient of the Playworks/Varuna fellowship and also received two New Media Fund (Australia Council) grants to create new works in 2002. In 2005 she received the Playworks ‘In Gestation’ award to create new works. Her work has appeared in the Australian National Script Collection in 2001 and 2006. In 1995 she was Runner up NSW FTO Mentorship awards for Cassie’s Apple, a children’s film script. Awarded mentorship funding Australian Writers Guild, emerging scriptwriter.
Writing for young audiences.
Catherine has written several film scripts for children and young adults, including Cassie’s Apple, and Electric Circus. She wrote several episodes for ‘XYZ’ the long running young women’s TV magazine program in Manila, Philippines. She has written a range of comics for Streetwize Comics, including the highly acclaimed Kicking the Blues in 2001. She is currently adapting her puppetry and new media theatre work for family audiences Dr Egg and the Man with no Ear for film and publication. She is also focusing on developing several of her bio-ethical fables for publication as graphic novels, and writing young adult fiction.
