About
Gentian Zyberi holds a bachelor's degree (LL.B) from Tirana University, Albania, and a Master's degree (LL.M) and a PhD degree in International Law from Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
During the last nine years he has done research, published and taught in the areas of international human rights, international humanitarian law, international criminal law and public international law at universities in the Netherlands, US, China and Albania.
His PhD research, carried out at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights from 2003 to 2007, focused on the contribution of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to interpreting and developing international human rights and humanitarian law rules and principles (available at: igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2008-0402-200640/zyberi.pdf
From November 2007 to March 2010 and January to May 2011, Gentian worked as lecturer and researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), Utrecht University. From September 2009 to March 2010, he acted as supervisor in the Utrecht Law School Clinical Programme on Conflict, Human Rights and International Justice. In the period September-December 2010, Gentian was a visiting scholar at the Peking University Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. During 2011-2012 he taught human rights and public international law at the University of New York in Tirana and the Luarasi University, in Albania.
His current research focuses on the contribution of the ICJ and other international courts to interpreting and developing rules and principles of international law of human rights and humanitarian law and on issues concerning the responsibility to protect and transitional justice.
In 2009, Dr Zyberi served as legal adviser and coordinator of the Albanian legal team in the Kosovo case before the ICJ. From November 2004 he has worked for the Defense in two cases before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), namely the Limaj et al and the Haradinaj et al.
Together with Professor Terry D. Gill, he co-authored a legal expert amicus brief for the United States Court of Military Commission Review and the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in the case of United States v. Salim Hamdan (filed respectively in December 2009 and November 2011).

Besides participating and giving presentations in several expert conferences and seminars, Gentian has served as external reviewer for books and articles for Cambridge University Press, the SOAS Research Student Society‟s Journal, the Human Rights and International Legal Discourse Journal, the Utrecht Law Review and the World Trade Review. Dr Zyberi served in the Editorial Board of the Utrecht Law Review (2005-2010)and currently serves in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Politics and Law (Canadian Center of Science and Education).
He has reviewed a number of books on varied international law issues published by the Oxford University Press and Ashgate.
