About
I started my career as an archaeologist, gaining my PhD at Newcastle University in 1986 and going on to do post-doctoral research there. I then moved into museums and later national parks. I completed the MA in Contemporary Applied Arts at the University of Cumbria in 2010. My current academic research area lies in the history of rag rug making in Britain and North America and my practice-based research is concerned with the meanings locked inside worn textiles and their use as amulets. My textile practice stems from traditional rag work techniques. University of Cumbria colleague Stella Adams-Schofield and I have created a research and textile practice group called The Read Threads. We intend to research, create and exhibit collaboratively.
