About
I am an independent scholar currently engaged in research on the early development of hospitals and formal healthcare networks in Central Appalachia. The development, in the early 20th Century of the Miners Hospitals and, later, the construction of 10 hospitals in the region by the United Mine Workers of America, brought new hope for improved healthcare to the region. The latter also laid the foundation for what we recognize today as managed healthcare.
My doctoral dissertation, a study of the development of community identity and its connection to paternalism in an eastern Kentucky coal camp, is the culmination of two years of fieldwork. I am also working on converting my dissertation into a book. A book based on my research, Floyd County, part of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series, showcases the coal camps throughout the county where I conducted my research. A portion of the proceeds from that book helps support local projects in the community.
