About
Hello, people on academia.edu or those who randomly ran into this page! My name is Chico (or Masaki). I'm a part-time activist focusing on queer issues, women's issues, disability and poverty, while having three different low-paying jobs such as freelance translation and tutoring.
I have a B.A. in Sociology from International Christian University. I wrote my senior thesis on the music genre called "kayokyoku" in post-war Japan, and the ways it contributed to cultural consciousness and identity formation. The thesis also looks at how karaoke offered a space for negotiation, resistance and, most importantly, survival of non-singer women in the period of time in which karaoke began to flourish in night-time entertainment businesses in the country. Keywords: music, gender, sexuality, psychoanalysis, performativity, the body, class, transgender, lesbian phallus, subversion and survival.
