Independent Researcher

About

I am a musicologist and conductor with a wide range of research interests that include French twentieth-century music, especially Olivier Messiaen and music in Paris during the German Occupation, Leonard Bernstein, Broadway musicals, Leoš Janáček, and music bibliography (especially twentieth-century music publishers).

I have written and co-written 15 books on Messiaen, Janáček, Music in Paris, and Bernstein, and have published numerous articles in scholarly journals. I was a contributor to the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and the Second Edition of New Grove.

My major current project is "The Bernstein Letters", an edition of Leonard Bernstein's selected correspondence. This is due to be published by Yale University Press in late 2012.

I also write CD reviews every month (over 400 since 2003) for International Record Review, along with extended feature-length reviews (6,000 words each) of historical recordings every other month, and contribute regular book reviews.
