BIO – SANDRA KIRKWOOD  B.Occ.Thy, B.Music, M.Phil.
Sandra Kirkwood has worked in the health, education, disability, and community cultural development sectors as an occupational therapist, disability project officer, allied health consultant, and equity and diversity consultant. In 2003, Sandra combined her role in human service with community arts development by completing a Bachelor of Music degree, then a Master of Philosophy in Community Music at Queensland Conservatorium, Grifith University. Throughout this period of study, Sandra worked with diverse cultural groups in Ipswich, Queensland, to establish and curate the Purga Music Museum and to write children stories such as "The Purga Music Story and Harold Blair," and local music histories, such as, "Turn of the Century: Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band 1909 - 2009." In 2008, Sandra established Music Health Australia, thereby bringing together a community of people interested in music and health to creatively explore how they can collaborate to assist people with unmet needs. Participatory action research is currently underway on Community Recovery Sing-along, and Creating Musical Tributes for members of the Stolen Generations, their Families and Communities. Sandra is a committee member of the Musicological Society of Australia, Queensland Branch. She continues to direct Music Health Australia and is very active in community cultural development with Indigenous communities, research, publications, and conference presentations.
