Independent Researcher

Climate Economics, Policy and Development

About

I am currently working as an independent researcher/consultant on climate economics, policy and development. Projects that I have already worked on or are still ongoing include two collaborations: 1. Climate change mitigation in Mexico (coordinated by UNEP); 2. Green growth in Austria (coordinated by University of Vienna, Austria).

I am also a Visiting Academic with the Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge, UK, and an expert member of the Economics for Equity and Environment (E3) Network based in Portland, OR in the United States.

Before going independent (towards the end of 2011), I worked as a project manager for UNEP in Paris developing a methodology for pro-development climate policy planning (see www.mca4climate.info). Before joining UNEP, I worked as a senior research associate for the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research at the University of Cambridge, mainly on large-scale macro-econometric simulation modelling of climate mitigation policies.

I have a PhD from the University of Manchester in development policy and economics (with a focus on agricultural development and EU integration) and an MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex.

My research interests are fourfold:
- Climate economics: emphasising an inter-disciplinary risk-based approach to the climate economic problem;
- Climate policy and sustainable development pathways: exploring the trade-offs and synergies between climate mitigation and adaptation policy on one hand, and national development priorities, on the other hand.
- Land-use economics, environment and development: focusing on structural and institutional barriers to land-use development (with an emphasis on post-Communist countries from Central and Eastern Europe).
- The epistemology of economic theories: the investigation of critical assumptions underpinning neoclassical / welfare economics and the search for alternative economic approaches offering a more realistic understanding of economy-environment-society interactions.

I have also recently published a single-authored book on agricultural economic and environmental transformations in post-Communist economies from Central and Eastern Europe with Routledge, London & New York (2011).
