Thesis Title: New Music from Hungary and Poland: from Reception to Analysis

About

I am a freelance editor and writer on contemporary music. I’m especially interested in contemporary composition, experimental music and whatever remains after the implosion of the Western classical tradition. Most of my writing now appears as journalism or in the form of programme/sleeve notes: I write regular articles and reviews for the Guardian, Tempo and INTO Magazine, and have blogged on contemporary music, as The Rambler, since 2003. However, I also present more formal articles: current subjects of research include James Dillon and Liza Lim.

My PhD was a study of the reception of new Eastern European music in Great Britain, with a particular focus on two important works by Penderecki and Ligeti (Passio et mors domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam and Requiem) that apply that reception history to musical interpretation. It was completed in January 2009, under the title New Music from Hungary and Poland: from Reception to Analysis. Issues such as the relationship between national identity discourse and musical reception, institutional power and the shaping of musical canons, the use and abuse of music in political contexts, and so on still inform much of my writing.

I am currently preparing the 6th edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music for Oxford University Press.

When I'm not writing, I make my living as a freelance editor and proofreader, specialising in editing academic and postgraduate writing.
