Independent Researcher

About

I place my reasearch work at the crossroads of Cultural Sociology, Historical Sociology and Sociological Theory. My specific areas of research are political culture in Republican Italy (post-1945), and especially the conflicts that emerge in the production of memory cultures.
Recently, I have developed an interest in the sociology of the arts and the dynamics of artistic reputations. I have almost completed a book manuscript on Bob Dylan, performance and the alignment of the audience to the artist, which is under contract and will hopefully be published early next Spring.
Finally, I work on topics related, broadly, to social semiotics and the legacy of structuralism in cultural sociology. I am currently working with Charles Lemert on an article that shows why a semiotic sociology should be developed in order to overcome some shortcomings of theories of culture structure, and the dialectic between idealist and materialist approaches to structuration.

I have been quite on the move in the past few years, with research and teaching appointments at the University of Trento, Yale University, the University of New Haven and the University of Padova, where I have recently taught Sociology and Advanced Sociology.
