About

Ecologist specialized in Avian Ecology, Sandro Von Matter has Bachelor and Licensee degrees in Biology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), same place where later he started his 2nd graduation in Oceanography.

Also as part of his academic training, Sandro signed up for the M.Sc. program in Animal Biology at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and conducted his dissertation research on the Seed Dispersal of an Atlantic Forest keystone palm (Euterpe edulis). In addition, his application was equally considered for the M.Sc. program in Ecology and Conservation at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul and also for the M.Sc. program in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford.

Likewise, this ecologist participated on some of the most renowned Brazilian courses as: the Ecology of Amazon Forest (PDBFF-INPA), the Ecology of Canopy (UFOP), the Ecology of Cerrado (UNICAMP), the Federal Bird Banding Course (CEMAVE), the Frugivory and Seed Dispersal Course (UNESP), among others. Sandro also specialized himself in Georeferencing and Remote Sensing at the UFZ Institute in Germany.

Sandro is a distinguished professional with a great background not only in ornithology; avian ecology; landscape ecology and wildlife conservation and management but also in climate change, sustainable development, bioclimatic architecture and even in chemical oceanography.

He is one of the pioneering researchers in Canopy Science in Brazil and author of the article entitled  "Sampling with mist nets in forest canopies", the first paper published in Portuguese describing methods of catching birds in the tree tops.

Besides being a ornithologist and active member of the Brazilian Ornithological Society, Sandro is an enthusiast of the spreading of the practice of Birdwatching around the world and it's one of the founders of the (ABOA) Brazilian Birding Association.

Is the creator and co-founder of two of the main means of communication among Brazilian ornithologists: "Ornitobr", an ornithological discussion list  (with over 1400 members now) and "Ornitoweb", the ornithological social network  (today with more than 700 members).

Currently, he works as an Independent Environmental Consultant and Scientific Journalist, and develops many projects in collaboration with several Brazilian and foreigner media organizations on the dissemination of scientific information.

His later contribution to the development of Ornithological research, in collaboration with some of the most celebrated experts in Brazil, was publishing the book "Ornithology & Conservation - Applied Science, Research and Survey Techniques", a work that is already a landmark on researching methods with birds in Latin America.
