Orientation is situated at the beginning of all things, without itself being a graspable beginning. Therefore, the Philosophy of Orientation does not regard orientation as a mere precondition, but rather, based on it, rethinks thought itself. This volume develops Werner Stegmaier’s authentic approach and examines its significance for philosophy, and beyond philosophy, for a broader realm of discussion and reflection.

Werner Stegmaier’s studies on Nietzsche, 20 of which are compiled here, are the product of three decades of vital work that constitute a  prominent part of recent Nietzsche research. These important studies have demonstrated a greater objectivity and provide a more plausible and progressive understanding of Nietzsche’s philosophy than earlier analyses. This insight has contributed to the tremendous influence of Stegmaier’s work on generations of young international Nietzsche researchers. Stegmaier, editor of the Nietzsche-Studien for many years, is one of the world’s leading Nietzsche researchers and this publication draws together his most significant works within one volume.

The digital format opens up new possibilities for interaction with monographic publications. In particular, annotation tools make it possible to broaden the discussion on the content of a book, to suggest new ideas, to report errors or inaccuracies, and to conduct open peer reviews. However, this requires the support of the users who might not yet be familiar with the annotation of digital documents. This paper will give concrete examples and recommendations for exploiting the potential of annotation in academic research and teaching. After presenting the annotation tool of Hypothesis, the article focuses on its use in the context of HIRMEOS (High Integration of Research Monographs in the European Open Science Infrastructure), a project aimed to improve the Open Access digital monograph. The general line and the aims of a post-peer review experiment with the annotation tool, as well as its usage in didactic activities concerning monographic publications are presented and proposed as potential best practices for similar annotation activities.

This paper considers the moral meaning of actions corresponding to the moral statements of the agent in order to clarify the discursive logic which underpins the evaluation of moral judgement on the basis of coherent conduct. Firstly, those cases are considered in which the ascription of truth-value to moral statements is made dependent on the practical coherence of the agent. Secondly, it is shown that the concepts of authenticity and integrity are to be introduced in order to increase the truth-making value of practical coherence; particularly, it is shown that linking integrity with moral truth is plausible when integrity is considered as an epistemic virtue. In the third part, the discursive practice of linking moral truth and integrity will be considered from a narrative-hermeneutic ethical point of view, depicting how the metaphor of self-sacrifice is involved in it.

The metaphor of sacrifice is involved in different contexts of human life; specifically,
the knowledge and the communication of truth are often supposed
to imply sacrifices. This paper aims to show the role of sacrificial semantic for
the conceptualization of truth in Giordano Bruno’s philosophy. In fact, Bruno
allows us to appreciate the continuity between the logical structure of the
religious institution of sacrifice and the philosophical use of sacrificial metaphors.
More specifically, Bruno shows that our understanding of philosophical
truth can be deepened if the kind of sacrifice involved with the search of
truth is disclosed by starting from a ritual and religious point of view. By interpreting
passages of Bruno’s works it becomes clear that the concept of sacrifice,
on the one hand, serves for the critique of specific conceptions of truth,
and, on the other hand, for the self-legitimization of the philosopher. Firstly,
we read the Actaion’s mythos in terms of a Foucaultian aleturgy; then we reconstruct
the connections between the sacrificial metaphor and other metaphors
which are used to present the philosophical knowledge. Finally, we discuss
the meaning of the sacrificial metaphor for a possible moral evaluation
of dangerous researches of truth and come to suggest that Bruno develops a
kind of narrative justification of the sacrifice for the sake of truth which appeals
to a specific fundamental experience.
