Abstract. Digital libraries are traditionally seen as complex systems, which deal with various data objects. We propose to turn this view around. That is, we propose to define the functional capabilities of digital objects which we intend to administer in a digital library first and consider the digital library to be the sum of the functionalities required by these individual objects. We then describe digital objects, the methods of which have from the beginning be defined to fit the requirements of the ongoing discussions on preservation ...

This paper analyses Libor interest rates for seven different maturities and referred to operations in British pounds, euros, Swiss francs and Japanese yen, during the period 2001-2015. The analysis is performed by means of two quantifiers derived from information theory: the permutation Shannon entropy and the permutation Fisher information measure. An anomalous behaviour in the Libor is detected in all currencies except euros during the years 2006-2012. The stochastic switch is more severe in one, two and three months maturities. Given the special mechanism of Libor setting, we conjecture that the behaviour could have been produced by the manipulation that was uncovered by financial authorities. We argue that our methodology is pertinent as a market overseeing instrument.

In this paper we study the evolution of the informational efficiency in its weak form for 17 European Union sovereign bonds time series. We aim to assess the impact of two specific economic situations in the random behavior of time series: the establishment of a common currency and a wide and deep financial crisis. In order to assess the informational efficiency we use some permutation quantifiers derived from Information Theory. Specifically, time series are ranked according to two metrics that measures the intrinsic structure of their correlations: the permutation entropy and the permutation statistical complexity. These measures provide the rectangular coordinates of the Complexity Entropy Causality Plane; the planar location of the time series in this representation space reveals the degree of informational efficiency. According to our results, the currency union contributed to homogenize the stochastic characteristics of the time series and produced synchronization in the rando...

Ninety insulin-dependent diabetic children were HLA-typed in order to elucidate the role played by HLA complex-linked genes in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus of childhood. HLA-Aw30 and HLA-Bw35 were significantly increased and decreased, respectively, in the diabetic group as compared with controls. In relation to age at onset of diabetes, HLA-B8 was significantly increased in the 0-5-year group. By dividing the patients according to the season at onset of the disease, only HLA-Aw30 in the October-January group reached the level of significance.

The Term Structure of Interest Rates (TSIR) makes it possible to analyze investors’ expectations of future interest rates. This study aims to make a comparative analysis of the TSIR to determine whether investors modify their expectations in such a turbulent financial scenario as the present one. The TSIR was estimated, in july 2007 and july 2008, using McCulloch’s quadratic splines

ABSTRACT In the present work we propose a methodology for the calculation of the Modified Net Final Value in uncertainty. This methodology will allow us to analyze investment projects that present financial imbalances and require additional financing after the start-up. It supposes a variation of the method developed by Borràs et al. (2001), since it determines in every period the necessity of additional financing. The application of the method of the Modified Net Final Value implies, in some cases, the use of two different interest rates to compound the same triangular fuzzy number. The result of such compounding process is a nontriangular a fuzzy number. With the aim of providing a methodology of easy application, we triangulate this result, subject to the condition of maintaining the same insolvency risk.

This Task will investigate how the process of automatic re-appraisal of digital holdings (resulting in either the disposal or the retention of an object) may be effectively handled in the context of digital libraries. At different times after material has been ingested into a repository (which is what a digital library is) it may be necessary to re-assess whether the ingested material should be retained or disposed of. Given that this activity will often concern a substantial quantity of digital objects, it would be sensible to automate such a re-appraisal process, identifying what objects need to be removed based on pre-defined criteria. Given the proliferation of digital information of all types and the challenges of preservation, identifying what subset of that information is actually worth keeping is critical. This reports investigates the relevance of processes to determine what is ‘worth keeping’ for digital libraries and suggests ways in which technology can be used to automa...

ABSTRACT The archival communitys interest in building records management programs has known a recent development at international level and in various sectors. This is increasingly relevant in the area of corporate records, where the RM principles and methods have been seriously neglected – specifically in the Italian tradition, investigated here. This new interest has many causes – among others, the improvement of business procedures whose efficiency and effectiveness are strictly required in the information society – but presents also contradictions usually not discussed enough within each tradition. The article tries to analyse both the problems and advantages connected with the organization of a RM system in a corporate environment, including as a basic component a summary of the theory and practice developed in Italy in this area and recently updated for digital resources.

For the definition of electronic records, the use of new terms, like “literary warrant”, is not necessary, and for the European perspective even not understandable. If this expression simply means “best practice and professional culture” in recordkeeping, we only to know what creators did for centuries and still do today and probably will do also in the future, by referring to the archival science, diplomatics and archival practice for clarifying definitions in the recordkeeping environment. A multi-disciplinary approach is still required for the electronic recordkeeping system as it was in the past for traditional records, but the theory and the terminology should be consistent and based on the deep understanding of essential characteristics of records and essential requirements of good recordkeeping to produce in the first place and maintain reliable and authentic records. Of course, a record is more than recorded information created in the course of business activity: a record is...
