Guns and Rain: Guerrillas & Spirit Mediums in Zimbabwe

This book examines what such 'cooperation' meant in the context of Zimbabwe's war of independence between 1966 and 1980 when hundreds of thousands of peasants provided the guerrillas with practical help and support. But throughout the country scores of spirit mediums also gave active support to the resistance, and with their help the scale of the war expanded into an astonishing act of collaboration between ancestors and their descendants, the past and the present, the living and the dead. Over the years, a number of technologies have been suggested to remedy these concerns. In addition, new techniques and control methodologies have been considered and/or implemented in other jurisdictions to address pedestrian safety, some of which have proven to reduce pedestrian conflicts and collisions. As part of the broader "Pedestrian Safety Initiatives Program", the City of Toronto is planning pilot installations for a number of these pedestrian safety initiatives. The objective of the pilot installations and associated analysis is to determine the effectiveness of these safety initiatives on City of Toronto roadways, which will permit the City to assess the relative merits of widespread deployment.

It first places the protection of children in the context of development studies. It goes on to outline current international trends in the protection of children and raises questions about them. Finally, it introduces the papers in the issue and highlights how they speak to the questions raised.

Children as domestic employees: Problems and promises

This article considers both the potential harm as well as the benefits accruing to children in such environments, and has inquired into the opinions of children who themselves are involved in this kind of situation. This exploration has encountered obstacles: for example, institutions for fostering children and extended-family scenarios frequently blur the boundaries between work within the home and for outside employment. While support for child domestic workers should be a matter of urgency, stopping children from working outside their homes is not necessarily an effective way of protecting them, and, further, this approach removes possible material resources from some disadvantaged children. It is, instead, better to focus on positive ways of improving children's opportunities.
