The inclusion of waste tyre crumb rubber (WTCRs) as a partial replacement of natural aggregate can be possible solutions for those concern. Thus, this study investigates the effect of using WTCRs at various contents (5, 10, 20 and 30% of volume) as a replacement agent of fine or/and coarse aggregate on water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration rubberised concrete prepared with 20% ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) as Portland cement (OPC) replacement. Twelve batches are prepared by mixing the industrial wastes of GBFS and WTCRs. The results shown that modified rubberised containing 5% WRTCs as a substitute to natural aggregate, provided high durable performance such as lower water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration compared to control specimen of traditional concrete. However, the rubberised concrete durability performance slightly trends to decrease with increasing WRTCs content from 5% to 30%, these proposed mix designs have a high potential for a wide variety of concrete industrial applications, especially in acid and sulphate risk.

One of the most criticalfactors affecting the mechanical properties of CSHis the interlayer cavities in the gel [3]. In this study, the effect of these cavities on Young's modulus of CSHhasbeen investigated. For this purpose, first, the atomic structure of CSHis created, and then interlayer cavities with different dimensions are created inside the structure. For modeling, first, a super cell with dimensions of 3 × 6× 1 times the unit cell of Tobermorite is prepared, and then each of these layers areplaced on both sides of the new cell, and a space is created between these two layers. This distance is basically the cavity between the layers. The cavities are made in three sizes of 0.5, 1, and 2 nm, and water is then absorbed by the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. Then the created structures are simulated using the molecular dynamics method, and finally,Young's modulus is extracted. The results confirm the effect of the interlayer cavity on reducing the Young's modulus of CSH gel.As the dimensions of the cavity increase, the amount of water absorbed in the cavity increases, leading to a decrease in the Young's modulus of CSH.

However, this often led to a significant reduction in the compressive strength of rubberized concrete due to the weaker interfacial transition zone between the cementitious matrix and rubber particles and the softness of rubber granules. Thereafter, significant research has explored the effects of supplementary cementitious materials such as zeolite, fly ash, silica fume, and slag used as partial replacement for cement on rubberized concrete properties. In this study, systematic experimental work was carried out to assess the mechanical properties of palm oil fuel ash (POFA)-based concrete incorporating tire rubber aggregates (TRAs) using the response surface methodology (RSM). Based on the findings, reasonable compressive, flexure, and tensile strengths were recorded or up to 10% replacement of sand with recycled tire fibre and f...

While cement-based materials are the most consumed materials in the construction industry, thermal properties of these materials can play a significant role in energy efficiency of the buildings. Cementitious materials with low thermal conductivity can be desirable for using as a part of heat insulation or for thermal bridge calculations. They may be used in different forms such as cast concrete, on-site 3D printing or surface finishes. In this study, aerogel granules was used as aggregate and combination of phosphate based cement and fly ash was considered as binder in order to achieve a fast setting material with low thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the calcination process was eliminated for the phosphate cement, which led to a material with lower environmental impact. Thermal conductivity as low as 0.04 W/mK was measured using the proposed material composition.

When the sloshing frequency gets close to the liquid tank’s natural frequency, the resulting resonance could lead to instability and even damage to structures, followed by catastrophic economic losses and environmental damages. As passive control devices, baffles are a place for liquid energy dissipation. This study uses annular and horizontal baffles to evaluate the baffles’ relative effectiveness on the elevated storage tanks’ dynamic response. The analysis results are compared with those of elevated storage tanks with no baffles. The flexible and rigid storage tank analysis is examined here, where half of the tank height is filled with liquid. The structural interaction between the liquid, the (horizontal and annular) baffle, and the elevated storage tank affected by seismic action are investigated using Abaqus software. The results confirm that using the baffles, ...

Predicting Effective Parameters in Cyclic Behavior of Reinforced Masonry Walls with Shotcrete Using Artificial Neural Networks

Reinforcing masonry walls by shotcreting one- or two-sides is one of the most common reinforcement methods. Considering the economic losses and casualties caused by damage to these elements in previous earthquakes, it is necessary to investigate the seismic behavior of these walls. The existing data can train artificial neural networks, and the behaviors could be generalized for future cases. In this study, the prediction of cyclic behavior parameters of reinforced masonry walls with one- and two-way shotcrete is investigated using different artificial neural network methods. Input parameters of the neural network include length, thickness, height, mortar shear strength, mortar compressive strength, mesh type, spring dimensions, rebar diameter, average thickness of shotcrete, and concrete compressive strength. Output parameters were the relative displacement of yield, relative displacement corre...
